Beets Me!

I snapped these colorful .....BEETS??? at the Pepper Place Holiday Market a few weeks ago.  This city girl is guessing, but I'm sure some of my more knowledgeable readers will set me straight if I'm off base on this.  Nevertheless, you gotta love the color!

Absolutely.
Beta vulgaris in its many forms.
Don't tell me you've never cooked beetroot...they're as healthy as and dead easy.
Here's a recipe from Bill Granger that we do http://bit.ly/hwDhGT
The yellow ones are good because they don't lose their colour.
(You also don't pee pink....)

Pink? Everytime I eat it.
OOOOH! I see what you're asking...
The local market garden grows yellow and orange beets for one of the flash restaurants, so they're a good source.
The Todd brothers in Nelson do the same for Matt Boutery's place in Richmond

Well, I suppose they would to someone from Cincinnati, Arkansas.....

Love it .. we dont see beets in our farmer's market stalls . I wonder why .. they'd contrast nicely with the eggplants .. I hope the people at Pepper Place appreciate all the free press you give them ...

The colour here is simply stunning. Love the contrast and beauty of fresh food

Oh, sugar, did they catch you red-handed?

If you weren't sure what they were, I'm guessing you didn't cook 'em. Don't feel bad; I grew a row of swiss chard and imagine my surprise when I pulled them up to find beets were on the tail end.

Mrs. C loves beets. I've never completely made up my mind about them. I remember being completely grossed out the one time we went to Australia when we learned that the locals usually put sliced beets and mayo on their burgers. I'm comimg around, though.

Who wouldn't love a vegetable that comes in hot pink. And tastes wonderful hot or cold.

Love chard...hate beets! But the colors are fantastic.

These are pretty....and healthy.

@ Bob Crowe
A burger isn't a burger without beetroot. Or a fried egg, for that matter.
The Roto Rd takeaway in Nelson NZ does a good one

They remind me of home where they were put in sand to be kept to last till the next crop! Delicious!

On a BURGER? Oh I'm afraid I can't forgo my onion and pickles for slice beetroot JB!

Virginia, Lovely display. As an aside, on your next trip to Paris, notice that beets are found already cooked, both in open air and super markets. Strange, no?

Love beets!!! Can't quite get on board with the beets on a hamburger!!! And what's this about Swiss Chard??? Beet leaves???

How incredible. Never seen so many different colours in beets. I tried a long beetroot recently - as opposed to a round one (!) but it had a weird texture and cost three times as much as the usual. Love the shot.

I've never seen such a variety of choice either, Jilly!

And yes Bob, beetroot in hamburgers in Australia of course!

I personally don't like the sweet taste of beetroot (and don't like hamburgers either) so I'd be hard pressed to try and cook them. Perhaps I should try jb's recipe though?

The photo is gorgeous!
