I took a little trip to Irondale yesterday. Irondale is a lovely little town on the eastern side of Birmingham. I had a fun photographing the trains and loved capturing some fabulous blue sky and clouds in between our monsoons. My grandaddy worked for the Missouri-Pacific railroad in Little Rock. I think he would have liked this photograph.

He sure would have. Nice near-silhouette, which somehow also reminds me of the rear (aft?) of a ship.
You make art out of it. Your grandfather would have been able to identify and explain the function of everything in this image. That just feels so right.

Oui, Big Daddy was a switchman so I'll bet he could tell me what all these parts were as Brattcat suggested. And Wayne is a bon vivant in Vancouver of late and I suspect he's not up and at 'em this early! HA

Train shots are tricky in Vancouver. Going anywhere near trains here usually means going on private property and risking arrest -)

Arrest? I could have climbed up on this car yesterday IF I could have climbed up on it! Cannucks are a suspicous lot! And NO, there will be no cranes and that's that!
Aw, common' V. We all love a good crane now and then. :-). So much of the working stiff's life is made up of these elements you've captured and made art of. I love the crisp ladder, valve and chain silhouetted against that huge sky. Our skies in Seattle today are full of those clouds.
And, where you and I would probably risk it for a great shot, our highly intelligent and polite friends in the large country to the north in general tend to obey authority, even if it's only posted signs. It's part of the charm of their national character. I prefer to be bad, at least where climbing heights are not involved ;^).

See W and I have this agreement. He does cranes, freighters, trains and ........power tools. I do puppies, kittens, kiddos and artsy French stuff. I ventured into his territory today but it won't be a good thing if he assumes I'll do it often! :)
I know nothing about trains. But I really like the geometry of this image.
