The FIrehouse Shelter

Since 1983, the Firehouse Shelter has provided food, clothing and shelter to those in need in our community.  We are so very thankful for this ministry in our city.

Sunday Church Series - Work in Progress

Today's photo might be a puzzle or better yet a maze!  Actually it's a labyrinth being installed at my church, Independent Presbyterian Church. When completed, and it won't be long, it will serve a special place for our members and the community to have time there for reflection, prayer or meditation.

JUMP!

The Magic City Art Connection series continues today.  These are two of my favorite photos from precious shows.  There is always a stage for dancing.  I spend a lot of time there.

Creative Hands

I love, love, love, the Magic City Art Connection.  It's one of Birmingham's finest art shows. You must know by now that I'm drawn to the children's clay activities.  They thankfully put the tables up under a fine magnolia tree with this fabulous light. I could stay there all day. If you are in the Birmingham area, the show starts today and ends on Sunday!

Family Matters

Last night marked the opening of Carolyn Sherer's second photography exhibit at the Civil Rights Institute.  Previously, her work Living in Limbo, featuring lesbian families in Alabama, was exhibited in 2012 and drew 17,000 visitors.  Wednesday evening Carolyn's newest work, Family Matters opened to a packed house. This exhibit will hang until June 9, 2014.

"The exhibition is aimed at initiating a conversation about social change and the need for family acceptance for LGBTQ youth. LGBTQ youth who experience family rejection are at significantly greater risk for bullying, homelessness, suicide, and depression, among other challenges," a press release stated.

A Change of Pace

Birmingham is a beautiful city, especially in the spring.  I will confess that I probably overdo the spring flower photos every single year, so today, we take a break.  Yesterday I discovered a very cool yard and had a great time photographing all sorts of interesting things.  This gentleman is just one example. Of course more to come. Oh, and by the way, we might return to spring flowers again tomorrow. I'm not quite done.

The Perfect Bloom

The dogwoods blossom in time for Easter almost every year. This year Easter comes late and we held our breath,  but they are still glorious!

Late Night in BIrmingham

The Art Deco Watts Building on 20th Street, was built in 1927.  I've always loved it and thought the top looked like a church.

Sunday Church Series - Palm Crosses

Today Christians celebrate Palm Sunday.  At Independent Presbyterian Church, the ladies of the church lovingly make each and every palm cross that will be pinned on each person attending services today.  It's a art and a tradition that is past down from one generation to another.

Rooftop Garden

This house in my neighborhood has taken the term "rooftop garden" to a whole new level.  During the warmer months there's always a nice field of green grass up there but the red tulips this spring were an added attraction.

Second in the Series - The Student Artists

Once I walked inside Space One Eleven, I was thrilled to find some of the student artists hard at work. What a wonderful place this is that gives students in the Birmingham School System a place to find their talent and fly!

City Daily Photo Theme Day - TRIANGLES

I had a few choices for our City Daily Photo Theme Day today but I love Railroad Park so this is my entry for this month's theme - TRIANGLES!  If I had a full view, the third grade teacher in me would ask you all to count how many you could find!

Today my CDP blog friends around the world are posting their triangles. Click HERE to see them all!
