Kid Magnet

These loopy bicycle racks around the Pepper Place are a sure draw for kiddos. Now that I think about it, I've never seen a bike parked in one!

Empties

Back in the day, we all took reusing very seriously.  I can still remember the sound of the milk bottles clanging in the milkman's wire basket when he replaced our empties with full bottles.

Thank you Becky Denny for opening your warehouse of nostalgia to all of us yesterday!

Your Guess Is As Good As Mine

While taking a little stroll through M Power Ministries great community garden in Avondale, I came across this unusual contraption. I'm counting on my smart readers to enlighten me!

J'adore les chèvres!

I am thinking goat portraiture might be the route I need to choose.
Many thanks to Deborah Stone and Stone Hollow Farmstead for letting us come
and photograph your beautiful facility!

Look for Stone Hollow's delicious chèvre in stores near you and at The Pantry in Crestline.

Horsing Around!

While Ethan was trying to take a "selfie", there was some horsing around at Stone Hollow Farms!  I'm just glad I had my camera out of the car window!

Vintage Line Up

The Pantry in Crestline Village stole my heart with their wonderful décor.  These old bottles lined up on the mantle were a great photo op!

Angel

Oak Hill Cemetery is Birmingham's oldest city resting place, since 1873.  I never tire of having a walk around and photographing it.

Nice Grill!

This snazzy car was probably my vintage,  but I'm going to leave it up to some of you car buffs to share the make and model!

Thank you Tom C. for correctly guessing a 1961 Plymouth Fury!

Birmingham Alabama Daily Photo Celebrates SIX YEARS!

Today is the BADP's SIXTH Anniversary !!! It's hard to believe that I've been doing this every day since 2008.  Monsieur Google says that's  2,209 posts.  I am sure I say this every year but I owe a huge MERCI to Eric Tenin, Paris Daily Photo, and the genius behind the City Daily Photo Blog community.  I started with Eric's blog and then realized I might be able to do one myself.  The simple act of creating this blog has opened the world to me,  and I've made so many friends around the world who are bloggers like me or just blog readers. My life has been enriched beyond measure by your blogs, your comments and your friendships.

Today I thought it would be fun to share my first post!

Nothing says summer like sunflowers!  These were spotted at the Pepper Place Market on 2nd Avenue South.  Open each Saturday morning from May through September, it's the place to go for the freshest homegrown produce, homemade cakes and pies, handcrafted items, live music, and cooking demos by local chefs.  Grab your camera cause it's great place to take pictures.  6/20/08

Boules Out Back

Chez Fonfon has a nice boules court in the back.  This is similar to pétanque but I'm correct, boules is played with clay balls and pétanque with metal balls. A fun way to pass the time while dining outside.  This day, a cooperative waiter showed me his style!

How Sweet the Sound

Last Thursday while photographing the happy kiddos at Independent Presbyterian's Bible Times Marketplace as I was leaving, the tribes were meeting under their tents enjoying their lunch.  I heard the sweetest sounds of a violin and followed the music to this tent where this musician was playing for the entire group. How sweet the sound.......

Potters' Hands

Yesterday I visited the Children's Fresh Air Farm in Bluff Park, to have a look at what was going on at Independent Presbyterian's Bible Times Marketplace.  The pottery shed was a great idea. After photos I was able to make my first pot ever on a wheel. Fun times at Bible Times!

Art Is Where You Find It

My good friend and talented Birmingham photographer Larry O. Gay, posts photos on Facebook with the title "Art Is Where You Find It".  I'm always inspired by LG's great eye.  Today, the compost bin at Oliver Elementary's outdoor classroom created by Jones Valley Teaching Farm,  caught my eye on a recent visit. Loved the colors!

Raise Your Hand......

if you have ever laid your eyes on PURPLE cauliflower!!! Well I saw it first at Glen Iris Elementary's fabulous teaching garden.  Thanks to Jones Valley Teaching Farm the students and faculty get to learn hands on in this special place.

Everything Old...

is new again!

A few weeks ago, I met some friends for lunch at The Club, one of Birmingham's older private club atop Red Mountain. There were men at work on the roof installing new lettering.  For those of you that remember the "old" sign, breathe a sigh of relief, it's not changed a bit!

Men At Work

I'll bet you looked at this photograph and imagined that I had to sweet talk all these construction workers at the Cathedral of Saint Paul to put on matching lime green tees and then align themselves on the scaffolding just to suit me. Nah.... I just drove up, slipped into a parking place, got out and got 'em!  Sometimes photographer's luck is on your side. Thanks guys!

A Fitting Farewell

Yesterday the city of Birmingham, along with fire departments from stations across Jefferson County said goodbye to Birmingham Fire Chief Ivor Brooks, Sr. who gave 32 years in service.

The area around the funeral at the 16th Avenue Baptist Church was lined with more fire trucks than I could count.  It was a beautiful tribute to Chief Brooks.

View From the Top

For years I've been blessed with opportunities to photograph the historic Lyric Theatre. When I first stepped inside, years ago, she was in terrible disrepair but as they say, "Her bones were good."  Since then, I've been back and documented the continuing clean up and now the full blown restoration.  Recently I was fortunate to be allowed to come inside and actually stand on the scaffolding and see this gorgeous chandelier up close. I've photographed it previously, but this view was the best!
