Space One Eleven - Creative Kids Welcome!

Thank heavens for places like Space One Eleven! This non-profit visual artists' organization does a lot of great things in our community.  Featured today are two examples of work produced from their City Center Art Program.  It offers a creative studio experience for children 6-18 from primarily area public housing. projects.  During Art Walk their windows were filled with the colorful work produced by some mighty creative kids. Space One Eleven is a place I will visit again soon.   Maybe they'll let me get some paint on my hands!

What a great initiative to open a centre like this. It is so important that children come into touch with art and its creativity as young as possible. It teaches them to see things in a different perspective.
Then show us what you made at Eleven's, Virginia!!

Offering accessible art classes is so important. The schools in the South Bay have Art At Your Fingertips projects taught to parents by the artist, who then teach the children. & it's great that PV Art center was the benefector of the Auto Show. This place looks like a wonderful sunny place for the kids. The red, polka-dotted door is great.

Beautiful new banner, just perfect for these first days of fall.

My sister is an artist who has taught life drawing for many years. SHe always says that children are natural artists before they get too grown-up and unsure of themselves, or told too many times how NOT to create something. Also, there is something about immature brains being more in touch with both hemispheres -- or something like that.

These works are so whimsical and uplifting. I'd love to visit this place with my little girl.

I agree with Laurie 100%. The world needs more centers like these. Would love to visit yours.

It is allways so good to know of places like that and of people who are motivated and determinated in their creation!

I really love your pumpkin pictures, mainly the one under the title of your blog! You have photographed some species I didn't even know of their existence. Very good work, they look beautiful!

Wondefule intitative! It's fantastic what kids can create, especially if the are encouraged! (... at least not discouraged!)

Oh, you must return to this again and again so we all can see the children's wonderful creations.

Please come back Virginia, and they will let you play with them. I'm sure...

I just added this quote to my post today. Your thoughtful comments jogged my memory. By third grade most children's creativity has pretty much been squashed. Places like Space One Eleven are vital.

What a wonderful place for children to create and express themselves. Your photos are wonderful!

That's very cool. Why, when I was a tyke back in P.S. 150 in Queens, we were lucky to have blunt nosed scissors and white glue. No wonder I had to take up photography to make up for lost time.

Virginia said...

S.T. I hope you didn't run with those scissors!!! (Or sniff that glue for that matter.)

What a great story. Exposing a child to art can show them a whole new way of interpreting their world. I'm glad this center is here to take up the slack from schools districts that are cutting their art and music programs from the budget (warning: hot button for KG!)
I was a popsicle stick-and-glitter (oh yes, lots of glitter!)kind of kid in art class. Maybe that explains some of my wardrobe choices now.

Anything that gives kids a chance to express themselves and build their confidence is a great idea in my book! There are some really nice works in your pictures as well - and so colorful!

PS: I see the pumpkins made it to your header. Excellent choice. :)

I love the wonderful colors and the designs you captured in these pictures, V. I think my son would love to be in a place like this.

And btw, those pumpkins in your previous post are just a feast to the eyes. I've never seen any pumkins of that shape (curly?).

The creations and concept are inspiring V. Thanks for including it.

Regarding the Immature Brains Theory. I have one and I can tell you the theory only applies to young people.

It’s good to hear that kids are being given a chance to express themselves in positive ways.

I will repeat something already written here but I agree 100% with Laurie! I'd love to have something like this here in Verona for my daughter, she is almost 3 years old.
I like your photos, a lot! I'll be visiting again. Thank you for coming on my Verona Daily Photo!

I remember taking my son to an art class and being amazed what he was able to accomplish with direction from the right teacher. It's wonderful to see that kids without a lot of resources are able to experience that kind of joy. I'm sure it's an unforgettable experience.
