Please join me in wishing Birmingham's
Rickwood Field, the oldest baseball park in the America, a very happy
100th birthday!! Today the
Rickwood Classic will be played at 12:30 and players will take the field in replicas of the 1910 uniforms. Built in 1910 for the Birmingham Barons by owner and industrialist
Rick Woodward, this nostalgic park still hosts baseball games for local high schools and of course the Classic each spring. Documentaries and movies have also been filmed right here.
I've posted many photos
here, here, here and
here. I asked my friend
Robert Woodward, nephew of Rick Woodward AND BADP contributor, to select today's photos from those that I had left in my archives. These are Robert's picks. I've made him promise to take Jean and me to Rickwood the next time he's in town for another photo field trip!

très belle lumière sur la première photo, j'aime beaucoup
I'm so glad it's still in use!!! So many have been torn down...
And no-one's modified that "No betting" sign...?
It is so nice to live such anniversaries, then we get to know the Whole story behind everything we see...
Nice choices. I'd say you've made a home run here.
Doesn't look a day over 50.
Wonderful perspectives!
I guess you will be at the game this afternoon.
Your first picture has a wonderful "nostalgic feeling"
I'll bet you $5 that sign is routinely ignored.
I like the turnstile shot a lot V.
Great to see living memories!
Love the signs around the field.
You're such a jock. I love that bottom photo -- looks like something from the 30's.
WV: Mints. Bet they sell them.
I remember going to Barrons games there before Region's Park (Hoover Met then) was built. Watched the fireworks on several occasions and had the ash a sparkles falling all over my car. Great fun.
nice golden sun!
Wayne,
I'll bet you $10 they aren't! ;)
Hiker,
Bet they don't! You know what a jock I am:)
B2,
Neither do I ! HARRRRRRRR
For all of my local readers, I am glad these bring back some wonderful memories. I promise to revisit soon and gather more photos to share.
I'd love to go to a game there. You know I like baseball and I really enjoy the feel of a small stadium. I've only been to one minor league game (the Iowa Cubs in Des Moines) and it would be a treat to see one here. The second picture is priceless. The color highlights are wonderful. And, uh, how exactly do they enforce this policy?
