Cotton.....

the fabric of our lives here in Alabama, for a very, very long time. Cotton has historically been a major crop for our state. By August it's ready to pick. Many times I've wanted to stop when I'm traveling outside of Birmingham and wander in the cotton fields and take photographs. It's really beautiful, but a little hard to get to. I settled for something easier yesterday at The Hen House in English Village. They had some nice branches in their window. Problem solved!

Brattcat commented that it looked like snow. Well click here to see some "winter cotton" from a previous post.

Now that song 'Old Cottonfields Back HOme' (or maybe that's not the real title) is going round and round in my head. Love this photo.

To me also it looks like a withered cup of fresh snow.

I feel like breaking into song, but that might be considered politically incorrect. So let me just say, on behalf of Q-Tips everywhere, thank you cotton!

B2,
LOL, you are hilarious.

Brattcat,
Last winter I posted a photo of that looked almost like this and called it Winter Cotton!

Merci Olivier

Thanks Luis and Bibi, I have "Oh I wish I was in the land....." stuck in my head but like B2 I wasn't sure how it would be taken. :)

We were lucky to see a couple of fields while my MiL was here. She was really amazed. I'll have some cotton coming up later this week too.

'the fabric of our lives' ... can you tell I once worked in advertising?

I have been in a field to photograph but unless you get there before the chemicals have been applied to de-foliate the plants and the harvesting machines, it is not all that "pretty." Your photo is just a perfect puff of fluff or as Olivier coined "un flocon de neige."

Très jolie, cette branche de coton! En avez-vous dans votre maison?

And there once rested an empire, didn't it? Cotton and the south bring to mind many things.

Is it soft like cotton batting or does it have to be processed first? Love that shot.

When I first saw this shot, I immediately thought it was a repeat!!! I clicked on your winter cotton link and realized my "mistake"!!! I like this shot (and the winter cotton one!)

That winter shot was snow on 'snow'. Nice!

I made my daughter take a drive by photo the other week on our way home from Texas. I didn't want to lose anytime by stopping, but I really wanted a photo. Only a tried and true southern would know what it was without being told. We were going too fast. Fourteen hours is a long drive...at some point you just want to get it done. You got the shot the smart way!

You're right, it can often be very difficult to get those shots that sum up our local area.
