Like a Fish Out of Water

Deer season is a biggie in Alabama*

When the first boy is born into a family of women, well it's a learning curve. Last year I followed Davis and his pals to the fabulous Barber Motorsports Museum. A first for me. Well this year, we were off to unchartered territory once again. I followed five hyped- to- the- max six year olds to of all places........the Bass Pro Shop in Leeds. Good heavens I wasn't prepared for all that. How can I explain it? A grand cathedral housing everything ever invented pertaining to hunting, fishing, ( and cooking it too), camping, and boating , plus all the toys that go with all of that? Oh and throw in every imaginable piece of clothing/accessories that might pertain to the aforementioned activities.  In addition,  a corps of taxidermists must have spent their entire careers stuffing every species of wildlife found in Alabama to be displayed in their semi -natural habitats! Melissa and I wandered around with our mouths wide open. Good thing Davis's Poppa was along to lead the gang through the place. She and I were pretty useless. A good day was had by all. Davis got his first fishing pole and all the kiddos got a cap. Life is good at the Bass Pro Shop.

I have more photos . Just wait.

* Before anyone gets all distressed about deer hunting, even I know that the deer population is out of control here as it is in many parts of the country. The deer season doesn't begin to control it. End of discussion.

A couple of years ago, Cabela's (another sport shop extraordinaire) opened in Glendale, Arizona. Now, the Hubman says that when he goes in a Cabela's he shops like a woman...spending hours upon hours looking at everything, and buying more than he really needs...
Well...he and his friend Art...both deer hunting buddies...drove from Glendale, California to Glendale, Arizona to visit the brand new Cabela's...then drove back again, the same day!!!
Now, I don't know about the rest of your gals, but I don't remember driving hours upon hours and crossing state lines in both directions, just to go shopping for a few hours!!!!

Oh, V., I love this shot! Each face tells a different story and each story is rich and sweet and unique.

All the schools close up here on the first day of deer season. They are breeding like rabbits, and I'm being kind. If they just used the crosswalks like everyone else, we would have less of a problem.

As long as the hunters eat/use the kill, I have no problem ...

Chieftess,
You are right about that. All in one day? that's crazy!

B2,
Well isn't that the truth. They don't even use the Deer Crossing areas of the highway like they're suppose to.

Daryl,
How's about a little Venison Jerky?? :(

Lily and BC,
Yes they were very cute.

Linda,
I guess so!

What a cute collection of little boys! Well, they all turn into little boys at Bass Pro Shop and Cabela's is just the same except a little more exclusive. (funny, Chieftess)

V, I'm looking forward to more of these shots!

Amazing niche stores, aren't they? I had the privilege (?)of visiting the Bass Pro Shop in Dallas with my son-in-law and granddaughters a couple years ago. What an eye-opener! Not my kind of place, though I suppose I could find one or two toys I could put to use in other ways. Glad to see we grandparents can still expand our horizons. -:)

Amen to the Alabama deer population! Now, if you want to cook up some venison, I might be able to supply that!

Deer population is healthy here in Sarasota. Last night, I saw two grazing in a horse paddock like they belonged there. By the way, the restaurants at Bass Pro Shops are quite good.

Hi V...

Looks like you had a fun experience at Bass Pro...we don't have one of those here in Ocala, but we do have Dick's and Sports Authority and Gander Mountain plus a few smaller stores.

We just returned from an almost 4,000-mile round-trip to Colorado to visit out daughter. Went through Birmingham twice (at rush hour - yikes!) but had no time - we were doing 11-12-hour days.

Lots of deer in Colorado. We put together a blog for our Colorado photos...you might wish to visit, but don't feel obligated to comment...just enjoy!

Hope all is well!

The antlers are beautiful, and the boys are a delight.

Send us some of your deer! We lost a lot in the fire last year. I'm glad there are still plenty around.

Chieftess, your story made me laugh.

Oh V - this is great! Poppa looks like he's having as much fun as the boys. My "boys" fished together here and in New Zealand - saltwater fishing though. They would drive from L.A. to San Diego to hit the commercial fishing store for their "supplies". Always did a lot of damage $$$. Chieftess - that's a great story and of course I fully understand. I am not so much into hunting. We treasure the deer we see down our hill and I sympathize with Petrea for all they lost last year in the fire.

A belated happy birthday to Davis!

I need to defend the Glendale, CA to Glendale, AZ, to Glendale, CA road trip to Cabela's. The nearest Cabela's to Glendale, CA is in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale. A mutual friend, who owns an airplane and is a bird hunter, suggested we fly there to check out the new store. Art and I were game. Then the pilot better-dealed us and backed out at the last minute. Since we'd taken the day off work we decided to drive it. 5 hours to get there. 4 hours of shopping like women where we just browsed and yes, spent too much money, an early dinner there of elk burgers, and 5 hours back. It was a guys' road trip - Cigars, war stories, laughs, and BS. We told one of the salesmen that we'd driven from Glendale CA and he said that was nothing - they've had customers drive much farther than that.

Most of my guy friends were envious. A few thought we were nuts. I'm ready to do it again. There's now one about 2 hours away in Reno and I'm looking forward to taking the Chieftess there. Last time I bought her a bathrobe with moose on it. This time I'll get her lingerie with bears and ducks.

Dbdubya, I hope you don't mind a little bit of advice from a friend. Lingerie is a lovely idea but bears and ducks aren't very feminine. May I suggest shotguns and fishing rods? I'm sure K will thank me.

DB,
THe BS part was a given.

And the lingerie part is going to land you on the sofa for the night.

Don't you think shotguns and fishing rods are a little suggestive, Petrea? Bears and ducks seem much more appropriate.

Petrea Burchard said...

Bunnies.

But what's wrong with suggestive? We're talkin' lingerie, right?

Actually, I'm partial to a really nice plaid...
