I like the composition and relaxed color. You probably didn't have enough light for more DOF. Those boys are charmers.
This is a great photo Virginia, not onl from a composition perspective, but also from a personal point of view; like ou say the first day of school is like a fresh start, not at all like the "back to work" time LOL!
