Downtown Ghost Sign

Lem Motlow, Jack Daniel's nephew had one of his distilleries right here in B'ham.   This downtown "ghost sign" on the corner at 2nd Avenue North seems to be in good condition. I'm glad my city is preserving these signs!

Wikipedia is back up and running and gives this definition of a ghost sign:
ghost sign is an old hand-painted advertising signage that has been preserved on a building for an extended period of time. The signage may be kept for its nostalgic appeal, or simply indifference by the owner.

I thank my friend, NY blogger Daryl for tipping me off to the term when she visited me here last summer.  Now I'm on the prowl for more!

We have a couple of "restored" ones here in Columbiana. I wonder if they count as "ghosts" if they have been re-painted.

We must be behind the times; all of the 'ghost signs' here in my town seem to be faded beyond identification. This is really cool. Thanks for sharing!

A couple of years ago we went to a dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in Pasadena featuring pairings with Jack Daniels! We walked in and were presented with two different types of cocktails, I chose the mint julep and was it wonderful!!! Then with each course we had a different Jack Daniels...my favorites were the regular ol' black label and of course, Gentleman Jack!!!

Love the sign!!!

What a wonderful blog - you are an awesome photographer. Would love to come and take a class with you! I've aways wanted to go to Alabama. I've heard they have some great antique stores - with some wonderful French items.

Beautiful work...lovely way to spotlight your city!
