The Peanut Depot, a Birmingham Tradition

The Peanut Depot on Morris Avenue has been roasting peanuts  the old fashioned way  since 1907, in the same roasters the original owners used !!  Morris Avenue is a quaint cobblestone street that has the delicious aroma of freshly roasting  peanuts 6 days a week.  Outside the depot,  you can find the remains of shells in between the cobblestones, where customers just couldn't wait to crack some on their way out.

I can well imagine the aroma around the area.

What?! No signs asking patrons not to carry peanuts out of the shop because there might be children in the neighborhood with peanut allergies?!

Okay, I'll dial down the sarcasm, because I know peanut allergies are a serious thing for some people. Sounds like a cool shop. I wonder how Alabama peanuts compare to Virginia peanuts?

D.C.,
I have had Virginia peanuts and they are wonderful. Let's call it a draw. The Peanut Depot wins in the "charm" department though.

Well, the shells may contribute to new soil. I notice, though, that the windows are barred, a sad state of affairs.

This is so funny. Michael showed me a peanut shop downtown over the weekend!

I like how the sign and the edge of the building have the same raggety look to them.
I have a soft spot for signs, especially the time worn ones.

nothing betterthan the smell of peanuts..well, maybe coffee. Peanuts go so well with a beer and baseball game. wonderful building here.

As someone with a serious nut allergy, it seems a shame to miss such a lovely building! I best steer well clear.

I love peanuts that have been roasted in the shell. They taste more flavorful than the canned ones. Unfortunately we don't have them up here.

But I remember enjoying them in Dallas, TX. It was a BBQ/rodeo themed restaurant and there were buckets of roasted peanuts on the table. Diners were encouraged to discard the shells on the floor and they made such fun cracking noise every time someone walkes by.

D.C. Confidential asked abot the differences between Virgina peanuts and Alabama peanuts. Very big difference! VA goobers are larger and are sold to be bagged and sold at circuses, ball parks, and... The Peanut Depot! I think ALL of the Depot's product is from VA. The Alabama/Georgia goober peas are smaller and are rarely sold for direct consumption. Instead, the AL/GA variety is sold to manufacturers of such staples as peanut butter.
I now have a question: why are all the comments on the web page written in July, 2008? None since!

Bhambamabill,
This photo was posted on July 8,2008 therefore the comments were made around that time. I'm thinking you probably found this blog by a Google search and didn't realize it was an older post. I've been posting photos since June,2008. That's a lot of pics. Hope you will look around! :)
