The Grande Dame

Photographer's Rule # 1 ..... NEVER leave your camera at home.  If  I had today, I would have missed this fabulous lady!  Another "museum" shot.  I get at least one every week, I promise.  There I am being the cheerful but not terribly knowledgable exhibit greeter today,  and I look up and this lovely lady,  along with some of her friends came right by me.  After I told her how gorgeous she looked in that spiffy hat with the bright green feathers,  I flew downstairs to get my camera.  They were having a birthday luncheon for one of her friends in the museum cafe, and I  knelt by her chair ( I was prepared to grovel) and asked if I could take her picture. She cheerfully agreed and made sure I got her new handbag in the shot.  She asked me what I would do with it,  and I told her with any luck at all she would be on the internet by morning.  She laughed and said she didn't even HAVE the internet!! Thank you Miss Terry for making my day.  By the way, her friend told me she's quite spirited.  I already knew that!

True party animals! Love that urn and those colors. They haven't started changing like that in NYC yet.

Beautiful post. Well done, indeed.

She's just wonderful. Age gives you freedom to be yourself and she's grabbed it. Love her.
And how right you are about never going out without a camera.

She certainly looks "quite spirited". And nice of you to remind us all about rule #1. Since you had to rush downstairs, maybe it's time to get yourself a little point-and-shoot that goes in a pocket...

un beau portrait et une belle histoire. En effet un bon bloggeur ne doit jamais oublier son APN, souvent je m'en suis mordu les doigts de ne pas avoir mon APN avec moi ;o)

a beautiful portrait and a great story. Indeed a good blogger must never forget his camera, I am often bitten fingers do not have my camera with me ;o)

Good morning, Virginia, there's nothing like a group of Grand Dames on an outing to celebrate something special in their lives. Miss Terry made my day, Miss Virginia (don't you just love that we get to be "that little girl" no matter how old we get?). And I never, never, never leave the house without earrings or my camera!

She has a really strange handbag. I cannot see very well. What is it? Seems a pizza ! Great shot anyway!Great smile under those feathers!

Great shot. Miss Terry looks like a hoot and I bet she's a shark playing checkers with her great-grandchildren. Green is my favorite color and it looks like it is hers too.

Wasn't there commercial for Visa credit card with a tagline, "don't leave home without it?" A good rule of thumb for your camera.

Talk about dressed to the nines. She looks like a force to be reckoned with.

Another one of your fabulous portraits! I hope one of her friends will show it to her.

Virginia, I was disappointed when I didn't see your Friday post as I headed to bed last night. More then worth the wait to meet Miss Terry! If you only had your great photo we would know she was "spirited" but your words go on to tell it all. For sure lets hope one of her friends will share with her.

Virginia, you've got another BFF award (no obligation, my friend). It's at my blog today.

I am so glad you loved Miss Terry as much as I did. Rob I am still laughing about the "pizza purse'. It's a flower I think !

Petrea, You are a dear. Merci beaucoup for thinking of me.

Snap, I bought point and shoot but it's not pocket sized either although it's smaller than my Rebel. I hate those tiny ones because they don't usually have a viewfinder that works. I've lost some shots because I don't always have it. They laugh at me for bringing my camera in when I work at the museum but I get some good ones every time!

What a fantastic littl lady! She does have that spirited look about her.

Before digital cameras the "rule of thumb" was not to put your thumb over the lens, or to leave the lens cap on. Times have changed.

What a wonderful lady she is. I can feel her cheerfulness and life enerty just by looking at her photo. It definitely is her and the way you photographed her.

I can't agree more with your advice for photographers, V: Never leave your camera at home! How true it is.
