Silhouettes

Click the image to enlarge
Volunteering at the Birmingham Museum of Art yesterday paid off.  I had my camera with me (of course) and was finally at the right place at the right time.  The glass wall and trees outside made for an interesting effect, but the gentleman in the hat was who I was after.  What a catch!

The Tune du Jour is "Just in Time" sung by Tony Bennett and Michael Buble

PARIS COUNTDOWN....34 DAYS

Wow. It wouldn't even occur to me to try a shot like that. Sigh.

I think guys who wear fedoras automatically become photogenic.

magnifique, on pourrait se croire dans un vieux à la Godard. J'aime beaucoup.
magnificent, one might believe in the old Godard. I really like.

Brilliant, Virginia!
Just the kind of shot that I could have made, really my approach to photography.

So you changed your top banner photo? I liked the pumpkins but this is very beautiful too!

Okay, V ... I'm going to have to have a wing of my house set up for your photos alone. Holy cow, lady, this is phenomenal! My absolute favorite of yours so far.

(I'm now bowing before the master...)

"Ombres chinoises"...
Have you changed your banner recently? ;-)

OK to clear up the banner fiasco. I tire of things quickly as I am sure you have noticed. (Retirement affords me the time to be a "nit picker") I decided to use the mosaic mural photo and in Photoshop add my own text. Well that meant erasing the title that Blogger uses. In turn , that meant that on my profile page my blog was not listed to link back. THanks to Bergson for noting that for me and Abe for trying to help, I figured it out and went back to Blogger's text which ended up over the mosaics and ruined the picture. If they can put a man on the moon, why can't Blogger give you the option to move the text up and down??? End of the story, I took that photo down and put up the hydrangea leaves taht are midway through turning that fabulous red. I have some other pumpkins that will make an appearance shortly. Thank you all for you kind remarks and for bearing with me through this OCD time in my life!

Lovely photo! I can understand and relate to OCD! No worries. Your banners are always a nice surprise when a new one appears.

Stunning photo! Perfect b&w! Wow!
Also love the leaves under the title!

Not so many hats like that around any more! Nice shot; not only by luck!

After all the trouble, your banner is really nice!

Awesome photo, that hat guy is too cool!

Virginia, the banner change taught me a lot. What a happy accident and aren't we all lucky to find out about moving title text cause I was getting ready to do that! I'm sure I'm reading too much into this but I also have a dapper hat guy photo coming up but that won't be for a couple weeks. The photo is wonderful and we're all lucky to have whatever photo you put up.

how woody allenesque! I just bought a good book in lieu of travelinkg to Paris: Walks through Lost Paris by Leonard Pitts. He recalls old parts of Paris, as would have been photographed perhaps by Atget. Virginia do you know Atget? He photograhped much of old 1800s Paris before it was demolished, really beautiful.

Virginia said...

KM,
Grooaaaannn, well add another one to the list! I have two for you. (I might just put my book list on my sidebar somewhere). In a Paris Moment by Meredith Mullins and Apropos Paris (I think that's the title) by Henri Cartier Bresson. I do not know Atget but I will cruise around Amazon's used books and see if I can find a "deal". thanks for the tip.
Don't you just love the profiles of those two? Their legs are in perfect harmony. How did I get that lucky???

This is a great photo. Glad the volunteering paid off! I like your Paris countdown.

Excellent photo! And you are right, the silhouette of the gentleman in the hat is an awesome capture.

Janet said...

What a catch, to snap a man wearing a hat these days. Great photo, Virginia.

Rob said...

An excellent capture! Love this silhouette photo. Coul be from any ear. I wish we could go back to those days where people dressed a bit more presentable than now. b Ah, well.

I too have tried in vain moving my text around on the header photo as well as moving my header photo. Frustrated, I gave up. I sure wish blogger was more tuitive.

Then again, there is that book Yellow book, HTML for Dummies. Looks like an absolute boring read sure to put me to sleep within the first paragraph. Long story short, I give up too easily. ;)

Virginia said...

DL, there are a lot of books out there I might read, but an HTML for Dummies is not one of them believe me.
Some of you techies should get on Blogger to offer that feature. I wouldn't even know the words to use to ask!

Thanks everyone for stopping by and as always for your kind remarks.

Bresson Voila! My fav to date. A class of it's own. Genius shot. I lament the non wearing of hats. I struggle against it, but the looks I get...

I'm surprised your tune today isn't the 50s or 60s doo-wop hit, Silhouettes. Terrific graphic design.

Sitting in the STL airport as I write this. Tokyo in about 30 hours.

Virginia said...

S.T., I need to know these things before the fact, like when I send you one for your expert opinion. 30 hours, ugh. Have a bubbly or more pour moi! Oh, and edit those photos BEFORE you get into the hooch.

oh VJ yes yes yes! i can't believe this image hasn't attracted more comments! i always feel a bit funny/uncomfortable on my blog when i label a photo a great snap or something really special but we shouldn't, especially not so when it's so obviously breath-taking as this one is. and i'm not just saying this because you asked me to have a look but this is my favorite of yours (although i think i've labelled so many as my favorite as time has worn on that i've lost track... but this one will be forever engraved in my memory). i love the layering effect - the figures amongst man-made structures in the foreground (one strolling, the other rushing?), nature outside, and a sheet of glass to divide inside from out. almost feels like it's been taken in a biodome of some sort... i love the silhouette of the man in the hat glancing at the goings-on outside. simply awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, heart-popping stuff, and a clever song choice to boot!
your 34-day reminder brings me back to earth :(

Virginia said...

Oh Burd, Ming has already said he has his bag packed and is ready to go, you might as well join us too! Grab your passport and hop on the plane with us. "Motley Crew" goes to Paris!

B, You are too kind. I imagine Bresson is spinning in his grave at this very moment!

Did you convert the picture from colour to B&W?

Beautiful shot!
My son is enjoying Paris for a year as his 3rd year of college and when I was with him ,he bought a hat like the one on your picture!
It looks like the fashion is back from the number of hats ,I saw,on the streets vendors shops, you will see!!

Louis la Vache said...

Great capture, Virginia! This wouldn't be half so effective in color.
