Shhh, No Roaring in the Museum!

Earlier this week, I posted two photographs of my granddaughter Eva riding the carousel in Tuileries in 2007 on Paris Through My Lens. My dear blog friend Shell Sherree created a delightful watercolor of one of the photos, so I posted the orginals.

Imagine my surprise when I did my volunteer work at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Tuesday and found this majestic carousel horse on display. Made by the famous Gustav Dentzel in 1909, it is carved polychromed wood with a glass eye. It is on loan to the museum by Jimmy and Carol Filler. I composed the photo so that you could also enjoy the BMA's magnificent Bierstadt, "Looking Down Yosemite Valley".

Beautiful photo, Virgina. I like both the lion and Yosemite Valley!

Re: your comment on my posting where I mentioned Mamma's Biscuit House, I am making chicken and biscuits, southern-style (is there any other...?) this Friday. You made me hungry...

Gorgeous subject and lighting, the expression is as fierce as it should be!

Thanks for your visit in Avignon today.
Regarding photo composition I subscribe to the DPS (Digital Photography School)newsletter and they give their readers weekly assignments : one of them a few weeks ago was breaking the famous 'rule of thirds' and putting your subject smack in the middle, just to experiment and see how it works. I think this photo would have qualified brilliantly for that assignment.

I have always been struck by the way hyperrealism breaks traditional composition rules. The sense of oddity you get from it can be quite striking.

He's definitely something to roar about. Great capture, Virginia. Add big game photographer to your list of accomplishments.

How sweet of Shell to create a memory piece like that. Eva must be thrilled (or will be one day). I love the lion and I love the painting. It's wonderful to surround yourself with so much beauty.

This is wonderful, V. The old masters who carved carousel animals were geniuses.
