Greens......Just Two Bunches Left

A few weeks ago when I was in Wylam to photograph the Habitat for Humanity home, I passed this vegetable stand, in what was once an old service station. Earlier in the week when I went by, the buggy was full of turnip greens. This day there were only two bunches left. If you are thinking, "Greens, I thought you ate the turnips!!!", well... you're not from around here.

I love greens, and there quite a few kinds of green, leafy vegetables here. My favorite is sorrel.

Nice photo! Hope he sold them all.

Seattle restaurants all seem to feature greens in the past few years (not Southern style though). The local green grocers feature several kinds from turnip greens to kale to Swiss chard, and I've even begun to use them more at home, although I still haven't mastered the perfect technique to replicate what my fave restaurant does. When I want good southern-style greens, then I need to head south to Berkeley to Lois the Pie Queen for my fix :-). How do you like to prepare these, V?

These look a trifle ... umm ... bedraggled ... oui? But yes, to echo Kim, if you eat both the turnip AND the green, how do you prepare the gree? A bit like spinach ... no no ... you tell ME ...

This is an excellent human interest shot, V, composed with sensitivity and subtlety.

Well to be honest, I never cook them myself! But, if I did, I would cook a piece of ham in water wtih S&P and then add the greens and cook them a long time. We don't ususally eat the turnip at all. I guess some southerners dice the turnips up in them but I don't!

Being raised in Philadelphia, Pa, we ate the turnips and got rid of the greens. Now I know where they went. Ha !

Virg is just trying to be lady-like. She actually likes her greens with hog jowls.

There is one place in our town I know where you can get greens and any other Southern food you want. They got more than two bunches. Might make you feel comfortable if you do get here.

Hiker,
Actually you are partly right. I figured "hog jowls" or "ham hocks" would send most folks over the edge! :)
Actually I do prefer lean ham as long as you get that good smokey flavor.

Bob,
Oh I'll get there but maybe not till later in the summer. Go on and make reservations at that place. I'm not sure about Southern food in the Lou but I'll take my chances.:) You home yet?

Alan,
It all works out for us. The Yankees send us the best part!

My grandmother always cooked the turnips along with the greens. I used to only cook collards because they were easier to clean, but now that you can buy them pre-washed it's a piece of cake. Funny how your taste buds change over time. I used to HATE them, but not anymore.

Just found your blog and love the photos...but as a gardener and veggie lover from the deep south, (now here in B'ham), I must comment that the bunch on the left in the photo are turnips with greens (you can just see the purple turnip top underneath) and the bunch on the right are collards...just give me a bowl of greens and some corn bread for the pot liquor and I am one happy girl!

Emelle,
Thank you for your nice comments. About the greens, I was afraid of that! I don't know a collard from a turnip green and proved it! :) H ope you'll visit often.
