Birmingham Urban Mural

This beautiful mural was started in 1996 to celebrate the Olympic venues here in Birmingham by Space One Eleven. The second panel was finished in 2000. It's a jewel on the side of Boutwell Auditorium that faces our Birmingham Museum of Art. I love it!

Birmingham's Urban Mural

Located on the east wall of the Boutwell Auditorium, this colorful mosaic "depicting a mythical dragon rising out of Birmingham's industrial past." The 28,000 colorful tiles were created through participation from Space One Eleven and completed in 2000.

Chinese New Year - The Year of the Horse

Yesterday I was able to spend a few minutes at the Boutwell Auditorium for the Chinese New Year celebration. The dragon is always a crowd pleaser!  I was sorry I couldn't be there for the wonderful music and dance presentations throughout the day.

The entertainment was wonderful.  I will confess I might have missed the best photo of the day.  I was in the very back of the auditorium working when the Chinese Elvis impersonator sang  one of Elvis' songs that was just great!  Now that was a missed opportunity for sure!   Stay tuned, there will be another day of photos from this event shortly.

The Faces of the Chinese New Year Festival

Saturday I attended the Chinese New Year Festival at Boutwell Auditorium.  Actually I did double duty as I was also recruited to help man the Museum of Art's table as well.  When there was a lull, I grabbed my camera and caught a few photographs.  Today, enjoy these portraits. Moonlight Becomes You

Those of you that live in cities like Paris, Madrid, New York, Monte Carlo and San Francisco, probably won't understand what it's like for the rest of us who struggle every day to make our cities look, shall we say more "photogenic".  Putting a positive spin on our hometown is why we are all here. Heaven knows if you want to see the seedy side, folks can just open the newspaper or click on the tube!  Last night when leaving the museum, I realized that this waterfall between the  Birmingham Museum of Art and the Boutwell Auditorium, not the most glamorous by day, had taken on a very  dramatic look when lit up for the evening.  It reminded me that maybe I need to be out and about more at night. The Minneapolis DP delegation is my inspiration!

Not as sharp as I would like, but it was hand-held,  braced on a wall.  f/5.6 , shutter speed 1/8,  34mm, 800 ISO for you photojunkies out there.  I am sure there were numerous setting errors.  I am sticking with my usual excuse - haste and in this case- darkness.
