The Open Door

Thanks to a partnership with JCCEO, Jefferson State Community College, The Literacy Council of Central Alabama, and Independent Presbyterian Church, the former Kingston Elementary School is opening its doors for English Second Language and GED classes with child care provided. Today marked the open house and I stopped in to have a look around. What a wonderful facility for learning and success. I'll go back in the coming weeks to photograph the ESL classes in progress!

If you would love to get involved, contact The Literacy Council for volunteer opportunities!

Mushrooms on a Log

These beauties were spotted at the Pepper Place Market a few weeks ago. I'm heading to Grandview Farms in Montevallo very soon to see all of their offerings.

The Four Spirits

The Four Spirits, honoring the memory of Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley was created by Birmingham native Elizabeth MacQueen. It stands in Kelly Ingram Park, across the street from the 16th Street Baptist Church where they died on September 15, 1963. The bomb that took their lives was planted at the church by four Ku Klux Klan members. Next to the church stands a peace pole that reads, "Let there be peace on earth." Indeed.
