Behold the southern pecan. Please don't pronounce it..... pee'- can!! This is our nut of choice down here. It makes pecan pies, toasted pecans, pralines, brownies ........well just about anything ......fabulous. I photographed this colander full at the Pepper Place Market last weekend. They're tough to pick but if you can find someone to do it for you, life is good! :)

There's a popular new restaurant in Uptown, called Picán. I thought the accent mark was an affectation until I read your post. Until now I've always put the accent on the wrong syllable. Never again, I swear.
belle photo, et cela me donne envie d'une salade de noix
It's always been PEE-kahn for me, and I love pecan pie...and those logs....and your photo. Here they call them 'americki orah,' which translates as 'American nut.'
They are always a treat to me.
They look tough to get out of their shells. Never knew that's what they look like all 'dressed up'.
I hope my drool doesn't short circuit the keyboard.
SRQ,
VERY hard to get out of the shell. These have been cracked so it's not quite as big a job. I like my already shelled! :)
Bibi,
American Nut? C'est moi! HA
If Willy Deville says "Pee-can" (cf "Southern politician"http://bit.ly/fipgWs) it's good enough for me..
Love Pecan Pie!!
looked like seafood at first. Something is wrong with me.
Chopped pecans in zucchini bread. Better than any cake you can make.
I lived in Texas for many years and learned how to pronounce pecan. I cringe every time I hear it mispronounced here in Michigan. That and Oregon. It is pronounced Or'-uh-gun. I learned that when I lived there.

Yay!!! I pronounce it right!!! But I think it would be better with a hint of a Southern accent!!!
So how do you pronounce it away down south in Dixie? Pecans take a lot of work from tree to pie. Those of us who buy a bag of them at the supermarket don't understand that.
If I can't buy the BIG bag at Costco I ain't a buying and a shelling. No mo' pecan squares without them being shelled first! AS always - wonderful photo.
Macadamia nuts are even worse. You need an industrial-strength piledriver to crack the shell
