A Photographer's Delight-The Vivian Maier Exhibit

Kevin McCollister and Petrea Burchard admire a piece that they agreed was their favorite

One of the highlights of my trip to Los Angeles last week was the opportunity to join my fellow bloggers at Stephen Cohen Gallery and the see a small but powerful collection of street photographer Vivian Maier's remarkable work. Maier died at the age of 83 a virtual unknown.  In 2007, John Maloof bought a storage container almost sight unseen.   He then discovered the amazing contents.  Maier left over 3,000 prints, 100,000 negatives and approximately 800 rolls of undeveloped film.  Since that time, he has worked tirelessly to catalog and exhibit her work.  You will want to read more here.

Wow! She was like the Emily Dickinson of photography! I just checked out her work and it IS incredible. Her portraits, especially of the children, are touching and poignant, but my favorite photo of hers so far is of the three people wearing yellow. I think I like it because it is hilarious. Ha!

Maier's work is... I don't want to use an everyday word. She was a true artist--unique, individual, inspiring.
I've been following the story ever since it came out and I'm glad I got to see the exhibit with my photographer friends. I believe it was Kevin who told us it would be in Los Angeles and aren't we lucky? The timing was perfect.
