Memories of Downtown Birmingham

As a child I have fond memories of shopping at the downtown Kessler's department store with Momma.  She knew the Kessler family and they were always so nice when we came in. Later, when they opened another store in Vestavia, I worked there during my Christmas break from Auburn.  It was a shopping experience in those days.  Today, I believe that the building on 3rd Avenue North has been converted to loft space, but they have kept the old sign in the window!

Did they have "trunk shows"? I remember ordering a fitted boiled wool coat when I was 14 or 15...emerald green with brass buttons...at The Union at Town & Country shopping center:

The sign really does draw one back in time.

Reminds me of the old Yielding's store. I worked at the one in Eastwood Mall when I was in college. I think those are all gone now?

Most of our cities have memories like this. When I came here to college in 1967 I remember Boyd's fine men's clothing downtown. If I needed a tie for a job interview I'd take the Olive Street bus there. Long gone.
