Today is the last day to take advantage of one of Birmingham's most fabulous art shows, the Magic City Art Connection. It is one of my favorites and so many of my dear, artistic, creative friends are showing their work. There are also many creative venues for the kids, shown here!

Art Is Where You Find It

Meet my very good friend and well known Birmingham photographer Larry Gay. Larry and I have been friends a long time and run into each other all over town. He is exhibiting his work "Art Is Where You Find It" at The Abbey coffee shop in Avondale.  Stop by and have a look and buy LOTS of prints!

Lite Brite!

Lux Somnia - Light Dreams at the UAB Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts encompassed many wonderful multimedia installations. This giant Lite Brite was a hit with the kids, and the adults as well. I was hoping for the big kids to back off and let the little ones have the fun!

I attended the opening of Remembrance last night at Art Folk Gallery. It's a marvelous group exhibit celebrating 10 fantastic years of Dia de los Muertos.  Curated by Wendy Jarvis, it's one you won't want to miss.  I will have more photos to share.

Who Shot Rock and Roll

Time is running out.  September 18th is the last day to see the Birmingham Museum of Art's great exhibit, Who Shot Rock and Roll - A Photographic History 1955-Present, get your tickets now!

Thanks to Charlemagne Records in Five Points, the outside of the exhibit is almost as fun as what's inside.  I took up tickets last week and thoroughly enjoyed listening to everyone reminisce as they spotted their favorite old records or album covers.

Andy Warhol Paints a Portrait

In October, Neil Printz, editor of the Andy Warhol catalogue raisonné spoke at the Birmingham Museum of Art.  "Printz presented selections of Warhol's 40 year love-affair with the human face."  On exhibit in the Contemporary Gallery were Warhol portraits of Birmingham art philanthropists Charles and  Caroline Ireland (1979).  It was exciting for me to be able to see and photograph these along with the series of photographs made by the artist for the portraits. The lecture and exhibit were just one facet of the Birmingham Museum of Art's celebration of "The Year of Photography"

Showing Her Stuff!

You remember my friend and talented artist Kate Merritt Davis. Actually she started out as one of my 100 Strangers but moved into the friends category shortly after that. Yesterday I caught her at the Bottle Tree just after she hung her work for an upcoming exhibit. My Birmingham readers can meet Kate at the reception there on Friday, March 5 th from 6:00-8:00.

The Bottle Tree may ring a bell from posts here and here and here. It has the most fabulous shadows late in the afternoon and Kate and I both liked this photo because of the dappled light. The bottom photo I snapped as I left. This funky bar/cafe abounds with bottle trees. I liked the sunset behind this one.
