It's time for a change of pace around here. Yesterday I scrolled down through my 3 zillion photos looking for inspiration and stopped right here. I love to photograph architectural details. Do you think I'll find any in Paris??? These lovely old twisted handles are at the entrance to Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral. They are so sculptural yet sturdy and functional at the same time.  You may remember that  I first posted some photos of this church's wonderful renovation here and their Greek Food Festival here.

"The wind of change is blowing through this continent."
British Prime Minister Harold McMillan, 1960

The American people have spoken.  That's as it should be.  What I really didn't expect was the vast number of  my readers from around the globe who have shown such positive support and interest for what is happening in my country.  May President-elect Obama ignite hope for the future, possess the ability to heal our country, and above all, be instrumental in forging  peace around our world. It is time.

Dear Virginia,

I just wanted to let you know how happy I am about Barack Obama's election! You must be so proud today!

Yippee! I'm all with you on this glorious day!

It's important for yout country, but it's also important for the whole world. Someone finally speaks about peace again. Even if it will be difficult, the atmosphere has changed. We are so happy here in France! You'll see it in Paris in a very few days!

Let's hope (and I am sure) that Obama can change America for the best. It would automatically have a positive influence on the rest of the world!! We all need that!

Architectual details are always noce to photograph, like this one you posted today, and Michael's music is an excellent start of a new day.

Lovely door handles! I have a collection of door handle photos, too! And yes, it sure is a blessing Obama won; I pray he will bring about many positive changes for the US, and that he will stay safe. Last night there was a big gathering organized by the US Embassy flor Serbs, local Americans, diplomats, et al. at a local conference hall, and everybody there "voted." There were four times as many votes for Obama than McCain.

You will love the architectural details in Paris, Virginia. Just use your eye and think small.

America is an infuriating country: it is populated by reasonable people who seem to be constantly overwhelmed by nutters. Except for last night! Welcome to the era of reason. Welcome to the era of giving a damn. Welcome to the era where jingoism takes a back seat. Welcome to the reality of taking all people as being created equal. We in Australia have taken a similar journey to that which you have embarked upon this evening. We have regained our self-respect.

It feels good ...

I know you personally did your best (thanks!), but I opened the Birmingham News site and could see that McCain got 60% over there!

Anyhow, we got another good reason for a glass of champagne ... in 13 days!

I wonder if the feelings re. Americans will have improved in France? You'll have to let us know. Similar door handles in Paris??? Yes, of course, ... your tongue in cheek comment amused me. Have a great time while there.

Congratulations on your new president!!! (I went to bed at 4am, only after knowing Obama has won...)
I just love your detail picture!

Beautiful scrolled door handles. I wonder how many people notice the details of what their hands hold when they open a door like this.

I also like details like door handles and whatnot. These are a very nice specimen.

I am glad the elections are over. I am happy with the results, but it's hard to be too excited down here in red country. You wouldn't believe some of the things my co-workers have said. It really scares me sometimes the things people can think.

Good morning, Virginia. Beautiful photographs and lovely sentiment about our electoral process. It is impressive that so many people are interested in the outcome of our election. Our democracy is working.

Well, I think my faith has been restored in the American people. I just hope he can fulfil his promise and not get drowned in all the hype. Anything beats Dubya!
Oh, love the handles too...

A momentous day, Virginia. Have no fear, people who know America and Americans have always loved you. It's the politicians who do the damage. But this guy, this brilliant new President will properly restore the image of America abroad. Today, America spoke and we all heard it loud and clear! Bravo!

The Handle is a great pick for this new era.

You're absolutely right, Vitginia: where is our little can, so useful for enthusiastic or too hurried visitors!
I hate Blogger when "he" does this sort of whims, like this large window for comments, you can't see the post anymore, and why some little photos of my followers suddently don't appear on my sidebar? No solution, sorry. Grrr!

I'm going to ask to Bergson!

Beautiful photos! And eloquent words. I, too, welcome President-elect Obama's calm demeanor and wisdom and hope he can put on the right path to peace and healing.

Gorgeous choice of photo, Miss V. We live in amazing times!

Virginia said...

Alice I will email you about the window problem. I can fix that one. The missing trashcans remain a BLogger mystery. Grrrr is right. D.C.Confidential is my "go to" girl for computer magic. So Bergson's yours, oui?

Thank you all for you warm wishes for such a positive start to our new president's term. May the rest of the world work as hard at bringing about peace as he does.

My hearty and sincere congratulations to you, V, and to all Americans for making the decision for change!

Your new president elect is very popular here too - he was one of our children. He spent his childhood and went to elementary school in Jakarta. Above all, however, we see him as an embodiment of hope and change in a world in facing a global crisis.

love your handles...i must say

I see that it is eleven days until you go to France.

My I ask a small favor?

I collect photos of "11" house numbers for my house and my home website is www.11bonita.com.

The French are known for their blue and white enameled letters.....

Love your sentiments.

God Bless America

and thank goodness the next chapter can now be written.

Whom ever you voted for.

We can now go on, with our heads held high,

knowing that Democracy works!!

The door handles are beatiful in their simplicity. The music you chose today is just wonderful!

Okay, they are beautiful too.

Imagine the work involved to forge those two handles and making them match.

I hope you have those 3 zillion photos backed up V.

I have a whole Obama post. Today the world turned it's pre conceived idea of America and Americans on it's head. As for the door handles very apt.Bush couldn't even find a door and Obama has opened new ones. They are simply elegant, almost puritan with a cavalier twist.

Virginia said...

Foody!-HA! Nobody's complimented my "handles" in a long time!:) So do you want photos or the real numbers? I am already running down some French car decals for Louis La Vache at a Parisian auto parts store, so I can add those to my list. Anything to keep the hometown readers happy!

B.
Can't wait to see Gary's depiction. I know it's great.

Oh, Peter and JM get the "Stayed Up Really Late to See OBama Win" award. Peter takes first place with 4:30 a.m. and JM a close second with 4:00a.m. ! I'm assuming France and Portugal are in the same time zone, but how would I know!

Eki, Thanks for that interesting info regarding our new president. A Jakarta connection!

I was keen to hear about that Greek Food Festival! I'm a bit of a fan of BBQ octopus you see.

I do hope that people don't invest too much into one man, I stuggle to see how anyone can deliver upon the (often conflicting) expectations that have been heaped upon his shoulders. Fingers crossed!

Virginia said...

Kris, I hear what you say. The rest of the world must step up ! He cannot do it alone. Thanks for your remarks.

Well said, Virginia! Well said and well photographed.

I enjoy all your architectural photos including the details. (I still remember the Greek Orthodox church & the downtown & ...). I don't know about finding these kind of details in Paris...hmmm possibly ;)
I like your lovely well-wishing words & hope for our new president & our country.

Great picture.
If I understand you will be in Paris in the next time. How long will you stay in France ? Will you move to another area in France ?
Give you answer through my mail box you will find in "Mon profil complet".

We keep our finger cross for USA and M. OBAMA, a hard job is coming now.

I am for Obama and this is a fact but McCain: what a man. His speech after Obama victory was really moving. I know you don't need my remarks but let me say once more that you all must be proud to be Americans.
