One More Day!

All of you in the Birmingham area, today is the last day to take advantage of the 41st Annual Greek Food Festival at  Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church.  They have fabulous food you can dine in, take out or drive thru, as well as music and dancing, pastries and so much more. It's a favorite of mine and last night, I enjoyed Greek chicken, rice and salad that I brought home!

A Weekend in Greece.... Let the Dancing Begin

Birmingham has such a strong Greek population, and we love nothing better to join them for their annual Greek Festival. This is the 39th year for this celebration that all of Birmingham looks forward to each year. The Holy Trinity Holy Cross Cathedral is the place you need to be this weekend.  The delicious food is a must and you can drive through and pick it up , but you really need to park and come in to savor the authentic music and dancing.  I joined my dear Greek friends yesterday in order to photograph their grandchildren. I will admit to sipping some nice Greek white wine and bringing  home a large sack of goodies. I 'm thinking I might need one more run down there before the festivities end on Saturday night.

I  hope these photos will please my dear blog friend Costas, Nature Digital, who lives in Athens, Greece and brings us so many wonderful images from his beloved country.

Sunday Church Series - Column Detail

I have been invited by my church, Independent Presbyterian Church, to exhibit some of my photographs for the annual Religious Arts Festival.  I've chosen a collection of Birmingham and Paris/French churches.  As I was selecting, I found this from the beautiful Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church here on Birmingham's southside.

Going To The Chapel

On Thursday I posted photographs from a local Greek restaurant, The Fish Market. My blog friend in Greece, Costas, left a very nice comment and a link to some interesting finds in his country. I promised him that I would post some photos from the chapel at Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, just for him! As you can see, this is a beautiful little chapel.

I will be photographing a friend's wedding in this chapel soon. I went last week to check the lighting and do a "dry run". I have never shot a wedding before so I'm a little nervous. The bride and her family are dear friends and I want to do the best that I possibly can for them.

Enter

It's time for a change of pace around here. Yesterday I scrolled down through my 3 zillion photos looking for inspiration and stopped right here. I love to photograph architectural details. Do you think I'll find any in Paris??? These lovely old twisted handles are at the entrance to Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral. They are so sculptural yet sturdy and functional at the same time.  You may remember that  I first posted some photos of this church's wonderful renovation here and their Greek Food Festival here.

The American people have spoken.  That's as it should be.  What I really didn't expect was the vast number of  my readers from around the globe who have shown such positive support and interest for what is happening in my country.  May President-elect Obama ignite hope for the future, possess the ability to heal our country, and above all, be instrumental in forging  peace around our world. It is time.

Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral

Holy Trinity-Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Birmingham's southside, has had a recent renovation to the front of the church and I had not seen it since the construction equipment had all been cleared away.  On my way downtown a few weeks ago I passed by and had to throw on my brakes and pull over for some photographs.  I have included a close up of the columns that frame the dark wooden doors.  The details are amazing,  and I think the creaminess of the stone is stunning.  Oh, and if the name of this church sounds familiar, it's because I featured their Greek Food Festival on September 12th. Go back and have a look if you missed it.

My friend P.J. over at Pensacola Daily Photo and I are doing a photo swap of sorts today. She recently featured a Greek church in her community.  Today she is posting a photo similar to my "Hot Grits and a Bible" post.

Greece is the Word!

Today's photos are hot off the press from Holy Trinity- Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral's Greek Food Festival. We are fortunate to have a large Greek community in Birmingham and oh my can they cook! The Greek chicken and rice was the absolute best I have ever eaten. The ladies and gentlemen of the church cook for weeks and not only serve a wide selection of delicious hot items, but they offer frozen dishes to take home for later. To top it off you get to hear some lively music and watch children of all ages perform their traditional Greek dances. I promise some photos of them very soon. All in all it's a great weekend in Birmingham when the Greeks throw the best festival in town.
The Tune du Jour is of course, "Zorba the Greek"!
