Winter Afternoon Under the Arbor

Today we linger under the arbor at the Botanical Gardens.  In the spring and summer it is lush and beautiful, but I like the bare vines wrapped around the columns now.  The afternoon sun worked some magic as well.

Note:  More on the Mercedes Marathon and Kat's results coming. I completely missed her finish on Sunday, so we are waiting on other photos.

Stark branches, but I can just hear the buds inside whispering, "Let us out of here!" Soon, soon.

les ombres (et couleurs) sont magnifiques, cela me fait penser à l'automne.

shadows (and color) are beautiful, it reminds me of autumn.

I'm a bit lazy with my comments in English these last days, but I do enjoy your great photos every day, Virginia...Don't worry, I'll be back very soon (and my horrible mystakes too ;-)
Chappell is so lovely (and the two spaces in her mouth too! Hope you've been a generous little mouse?)
And I don't understand your story about horseshoes on my blog, I need your help, please.

I think the way the vines weave around the columns are nice and pleasing on the eye.

There is a nice arbor at the Biltmore House in North Carolina that I especially liked. It was huge.

Every season has its own flavour and I like this winter one, kind of melancholy but in a good way!

Winter light crisp and clean on golden tones and tumbling vines is divine.Fading glory again from another Southern Belle. Check out the other B'ham Botanical Gardens of my youth to compare.

What a beautiful winter light. It is a good help sometimes for taking details differently, with soft shadows.
Yes these pictures are really sweet. A nice place to be and enjoy just now, even without any leaves and flowers...

The top photo is very romantic and looks somehow Italian to me.

Summer may be lush with colors, but the details here in winter are marvelous.

So full of winter gray and what the poet W. B. Yeats called the "half light" ...I love these images. Callaway Gardens is just down the road from where I work. I love driving through there during the winter...especially in the late afternoon light. You should bring your camera there some day.

Harriet,
Merci beaucoup, mon amie!

Fire Light, I might have to venture south to Callaway Gardens sometime. Meet me there?

Carrie,
I am afraid I've overdone the photo shoots here but I can't resist.

Can do! I have a corporate pass. I will take you through the gate for a few photography pointers! Have you been to the butterfly center there? You have some really good work here, Virginia!

Looks like Birmingham and Cheltenham have large stone sphere posts in common. I liked all the different views and details.

Love these pictures. Looks so quiet and serene. Now what I'd like to see you do is take us back to these same spots for the next three seasons - I know we'd love them all - but then we could pick our favorite. As always - great work!

I don't mind telling you how envious I am of these photos. I can just imagine the light and maybe a hint of a chill? What a wonderful photo essay,V.

Beautiful place. The colonnade reminds me of an italian limonaia.
