This weekend I have had the pleasure of volunteering to guide bus tours for the attendees at the Southern Garden History Society's meeting, being held at our Birmingham Botanical Gardens. I've so enjoyed showing off my beautiful hometown, and vitiating some outstanding gardens for myself. Of course, meeting so many lovely visitors to our city was just a delight.

For the next few days, I'll share some of my images. 

Star Magnolia

The whimsical, carefree cousin to the our more sedate southern magnolias. This one blooms in early spring before it's leaves open. I love it.

Think Pink, Think Spring

I know. I know. We might get another little, weird spring snow or freeze. I prefer to relish the tulips that are popping up and saying a little prayer they will continue to flourish!

Hurricane Sunday

I slipped out a side door at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens' Antiques in the Gardens on Sunday afternoon. The rain slacked off, and I was able to catch this pretty waterfall in a small courtyard. Yes, it's October and Birmingham is still warm and humid and GREEN!


Thank you to all my friends near and far who inquired about our safety here in Birmingham as Hurricane Nate blew through. Thankfully we escaped with just some rain and wind on Sunday. We are grateful but still heartsick for the many still suffering from the past hurricanes. Please give to relief efforts for all of the islands affected.

Farewell Fall!

Autumn in Birmingham came very late this year. We suffered through an awful drought. I love the autumn color in my city and bid it a fond farewell as we are finally getting rain and just this week some chilly weather. Christmas is in the air. Stay tuned!

Fall in the Gardens

Yes, it gets really hot a humid here in the summer but you can't beat the rest of the year in Birmingham. Taken just a week ago, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens was still lush , despite no rain, and gorgeous at the end of September!

Lotsa Hosta

A quick trip through the gardens with my friend Linda yesterday, found us in the Southern Living Garden. The hosta knocked me out!

Fallen Beauty

I love flowers after their prime. I especially loved the raindrops on this fallen camellia at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. 

Great Blue Heron

One of two blue herons, INTERLUDE, by Gary Price is the centerpiece of the Cochran Water Wall at the Birmingham Botanical Garden's Kayser Lily Pool. It draws me in every visit. 

Autumn Still Life

Leaf N Petal Garden Shop at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens always has such marvelous outside displays. I always snap their first before heading into the gardens.

Autumn in the Gardens

I love our Botanical Gardens. It's near my home and I pass it almost every day. Sometimes I just stroll around for half and hour with my camera and am reminded always how lucky we are to have this peaceful place.... with no admittance fee!

Light And Shadows

This tranquil spot near the lily pond at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens always draws my eye. The light and shadows of the wrought iron tables and chairs are hard to resist.

Birmingham Rouge - Japanese Maples

Fall is finally showing her stuff in Birmingham although most of our trees are just thinking about changing colors. I did a little walk about at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens this week and found this glorious Japanese Maple at Leaf 'n Petal's garden shop there.

Rest Stop

This gray bench against the bright Mexican sunflowers makes for a nice resting spot at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

I will be teaching From Snapshots to Creative Photographs at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church's Conservatory of the Arts. Classes are from 6-8 p.m. and start Thursday September 10th for 5 weeks. You can sign up online!

Afternoon at the Gardens

Late afternoon stroll through the Rose Garden of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, proved a very good idea. 

HIdden

among the azaleas. It's officially azalea season in Birmingham. This is my favorite variety, George Lindley Taber at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
