I was going to say one of the burghers of Calais but someone already checked and found that's wrong. Then I Googled "bronze sculpture Birmingham Alabama" and came up with nothing. You have to help us.
Hey, my southern education continues. It happens that I'll spend a weekend in Memphis in April.
Actually these are the hands of Jean d'Aire, one of Rodin's best known sculptures. It's a nude study for the famous Burghers of Calais, found in the Sculpture Garden of the BMA.

Well, it's not a burgher from Calais. (I had to check though.)
No idea but it's a great detail!
A Rodin?
Wild guess here----- A young Ali... Cassius Clay?
Eli Whitney?
No idea, though Stuart's guess strikes a chord with me given what I know of that series of Rodin statues!
