We Finally Meet Charlie Lucas in Person!

Wednesday was my lucky day. I was invited to a friend's home to meet nationally known Alabama folk artist, Charlie Lucas! Charlie, also known as the Tin Man, was up from his home near Montgomery to install this piece of sculpture in their yard. Avid art collectors, they have many pieces of Charlie's work. What a nice man. He took me all around the yard and talked about his sculpture. If his name sounds familiar, you've read about him here and here and here. Alabama Art Folk Gallery

The Birmingham Museum of Art has opened a new gallery dedicated to Alabama Folk Artists. Located in the former Young and Vann Building on First Avenue North in downtown Birmingham, it is currently featuring Charlie Lucas's work as well as Lonnie Holley and the Gee's Bend Quiltemakers. I've previously posted Charlie's work here. It's the perfect place to showcase our talented Alabama folk artists. I hope my Birmingham/Alabama readers will pay a visit here soon.

"Awesome" Sculpture!

Several weeks ago I posted a piece of sculpture by Alabama artist Charlie Lucas.  A nice collection of his metal pieces is currently on exhibition outside in the Sculpture Pit at the Birmingham Museum of Art.  I claimed that this is one place that  children could run around and enjoy the art, even ......touch it!  Just to prove it, here's my grandson Davis having a closer look at two pieces  that he thought were really "awesome".   This might disprove the theory that museums can't be kid friendly.

Reuse and Recyle!

Don't miss " The World Through My Eyes", an exhibition of Alabama's noted self taught artist Charlie Lucas at the Birmingham Museum of Art.  For his sculpture Lucas often uses machine parts and other cast off materials.  Twelve of his large scale pieces  are on exhibit in the museum's sculpture pit.  Recently I spent an afternoon photographing all of  the works in the sculpture garden.  It was a photographer's paradise.  I especially liked this wall mounted piece, but don't worry, I have other pieces to share.
