The Sons of Vulcan are a non-profit blacksmith and metalworking group located in our Avondale community, dedicated to the artistic traditions of metal working.  Last month, they demonstrated their expertise at our Art in Avondale Park event.  Very cool to watch. I'll have more photos to come.

Popular Pops!

Steel City Pops has taken Birmingham by storm.  Fans line up at events to buy these tasty "gourmet" popsicles. These aren't your ice cream wagon pops. They have taken this creamy treat to a whole new level. Flavors like Maple Bacon and Bourbon, Buttermilk, Poached Pear and so many more that change with the seasons make this one fast growing business.  For you folks in Dallas, there's a Steel City Pops in your town now as well!

Birds of a Feather

 One of the key attractions at Saturday's Art in Avondale Park had to be the Birmingham Parrot Rescue booth. Stan and Steff Davis have been doing this for three years and brought these and many more birds to delight the youngsters and adults as well. Their booth was swamped for the entire art show and I never saw them even sit down for a break. They are passionate about what they do!

Duck, Duck, Goose!

Avondale Park's pond is a kid magnet. Who can resist feeding the ducks, even when there's a big art show going on all around you!

Dog Tired!

After working all day at the very successful Art in Avondale Park, I knew just how this sweet pup felt.  Look at those paws, this baby won't be hanging over his mom's shoulder much longer! #ilovegoldens

CALLING ALL BUDDING ARTISTS!

For several years, I've had the pleasure of serving on the planning committee for Art In Avondale Park with a small but dedicated group that loves our community and is dedicated to putting on an art event that focuses on children, giving them many great opportunities to create and also raise money for the art program at Avondale Elementary our neighboring school.  Thanks to the many wonderful artists and non profit groups, it's always a success for our city and especially our neighborhood. For the next two days, I will be featuring photos from past events.

I had the great job of photographing Art In Avondale Park last weekend.  I do the usually documentary shots but really love that I get to find the special moments that I love so much. This beautiful girl was busy painting but I was lucky enough to capture her in a pensive moment.

Singing The Blues

Singer, guitarist and songwriter Debbie Bond will be appearing in the amphitheater at Art in Avondale  Park on Saturday as part of the terrific lineup of musicians.  Debbie is also "co-founder and executive director of the Alabama Blues Project, an educational non profit to preserve Alabama's rich blues heritage."

Come bring the whole family for a full day of artists, children's art and fun activities and hear some great music. (10-4)

The Faces of Art in Avondale Park

Art in Avondale Park is near and dear to my heart.  Our art show is coming up this Saturday from 10-4 at the beautiful newly renovated Avondale Park.  This event is geared toward families so there will be a lot of fun, free activities for the kids plus some great art for everyone.  Our event last May was a huge success,  so today I share some of the smiling faces with you.

The Pillars

The Pillars gospel sextet has been singing together for a long time. Four of the six are original members.  They will be appearing again this year in the amphitheater at Avondale Park next Saturday as a part of Art in Avondale Park.

From time to time for this next week, I'll be posting photos from last year's very successful Art in Avondale Park show last spring.  We have another one coming up on Saturday, Oct. 20th from 10-4 so come on out and meet the artists, hear live music and let the kids do some fun activities as well.  It's a show for the whole family.

Today, vintage jewelry by my talented friend Christy Turnipseed. Here company Li'l Seeds feature jewelry made from old maps, sheet music, books...just about anything! I have Paris maps and Métro maps pendants myself!
