How Bout a Game of Checkers?

There was a tent set up to teach the young people how to play checkers. Some others found it a nice way to spend some time together. I just loved these two photos. I hope you do too.

Saturday I spent a delightful morning at the East Lake Farmer's Market. You can find it in the parking lot of the East Lake Methodist Church ( 2nd Ave/78th St). Started by Rev. Sally Alloca, it's small, it's got great produce , arts and crafts , music and just really nice folks. I pulled up a chair at Peg Holland's jewelry booth and spent two hours there with Peg and Jeff Willoughby, the inspiration behind this East Lake Purple House Parade. Oh my, I'm heading back often. There were farmers there with wonderful offerings at great prices, but also homemade cornbread, cakes and........CHEESE STRAWS! Plus music and a food demonstration by Mitchell, who showed us how to make a fine black eyed pea/corn/etc marinated salad. I had some, it was terrific. Please join me and support this wonderful group of people trying their best to revitalize this area of Birmingham! More photos to come.

Follow the market on Facebook here.

Now this brings back memories. We had a set like that when I. was about 6. That 1st picture is just daring. The hats and the watermelon - a Norman Rockwell of today.

If I were anywhere in the vicinity, I'd be there in a heartbeat. How delightful. Can't wait for more pictures.

I like the photos (especially the young boy holding the watermelon!) but I love your description of the market even more. Wishing Peg and Jeff, and everybody else involved, much luck!

The watermelon in your banner made my mouth water. Then I go down to your first photo of the day and there's a watermelon in the lap of the checkers player. What a terrific set of images, V.

Olivier,
I had to Google Translate a bit of your comment. LOL, oui I forget my luniettes aussi. A good set of checkers for toi et moi! :)

Hiker,
I knew you'd love this.

Brattcat,
isn't the boy and his melon the cutest thing ever?

Tash,
These are so much easier to play on.

Hilda,
Thanks for your nice comment!

B2,

Looks like fun. I need to find a market that keeps afternoon hours instead of early morning. I'm not much good at getting out of the house early.

Love you juicy header photo, V!!

Uh, checkmate. There is something unnatural about playing checkers on a carpet.

Checkers, "les dames" (ladies) in French. I wonder why it's called that?
