Like a Trip Back to Greece

The Fish Market Restaurant on Birmingham's Southside, not only offers a huge selection of fresh fish from their market, they also have an outstanding restaurant. Owner George Sarris has decorated it in the style of his native Greece. See for yourself!

I cant resist not to comment on this beautiful post of yours Virginia. I m so glad to see that expatriated Greeks, still try to use touches of decoration from Greece in their business.
The ceramic jars shown here, are similar to those used in Minoan Crete, and found in excavations, dating some 3000 to 3500 years back.
They are still made the traditional way, and used in Crete, in our days. They are used for storage of olive oil or seeds, as they were used in the Minoan times, or they are used as decorative items or flower pots. All this in contrast to the use of plastic which which is prevailing in our days.
I have also noticed with the marble tops, and the hand made chairs, similar to those we have for everyday use in Crete.
Another detail in your beautiful photographs, is the use of salt, it is a Greek brand.
I bet the seafood in this restaurant must be really delicious, and the proud owner of the place must be hiding more items and delicacies from Greece for his customers, like olive oil and olives,l cheese and more.
Next time you visit the place i d like you to congratulate him on my behalf for he is an ambassador of Greece in Birmingham, someone who is alone doing what others, standing higher up in public offices fail to do.
have a great day Virginia.

Costas,
Oh I've not even shown the lovely things inside or the olive press! George took a local photographer with him to Greece and there are some wonderful BW photographs inside as well. Maybe I'll go back and take some more for you! We have a large Greek population in Birmingham and many are in the restraunt business. All excellent cooks! I also have some photos from the Greek church that I plan to post this week as well! Thank you for your comments.

Virginia, talking about the oil press, go back a little in my posts and check this one :
http://naturedigital.blogspot.com/2010/06/old-housemuseum-in-village.html
It is an actual olives press dating back quite a few years.
Some of the items on display were buried there, and recovered when there were some minor renovations done to the house, some others were collected by the present owner.
They all need some more arrangement and placing around as are in disorder but they are interesting to see.
Thai oil mill was "powered" by a donkey at the time it was working. I dont remember it being used, but I remember others, similar at work.

Well, it's been a long time since our one brief visit to Greece but this looks just right. A relaxing and convivial atmosphere (there's a Greek word) but which is hotter, B'ham or Athens (not the one in Georgia)? Probably both miserable at this time of year.

Love that first image, still life... as the world rushes by.

Actually Bob...We just got back from Athens, Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini...definitely hot, but not as hot as Rome or what V has described in B'ham!!! And as for the delightful Greek setting...Opa!!! Exactly what I enjoyed sitting at while enjoying a bit of Satzika, Calimari and Retsina!!! We're already thinking of an extended return trip!!!

Costas...you live in a delightful country!!!
