Summer Memories

I don't know about you , but this brought back memories of sitting in my Nanny's kitchen in Little Rock on a summer afternoon. She would spread newspapers on the kitchen table, plop a big box of salt down, and then commence to slicing up wedges of ice cold watermelon for us with her butcher knife. I was allowed to shed my shirt and let the juice slide down my tummy. Summer memories I've not forgotten!

Yum. I don't put salt on watermelon, but do sprinkle it on cantaloupe and honeydew.
People here think that's odd!

I hope your little fellow in this excellent photo had been fingerpainting and that's sort of clean dirt under his nails!

I, too, noticed those fingernails on that hungry boy. Just love the way you've captured him at the moment of complete union between man and melon.

I think that he was making mudpies!

Classic shot, as I remember, my summers... juicy watermelon, spittin' seeds and DIRTY fingernails! Can it get any better????

Oh the dirty fingernails add that Huck Finn twist! :)

He sure looks like he's enjoying himself! That red hair coupled with those freckles and filthy fingernails really add to the sense of innocence about him. The only care in the world he has is figuring out how to sink his teeth deep enough to reach that watermelon rind.

Sounds very familiar and makes us hungry.

There he is again, the official angel of Alabama. You know, I've never seen a photo of kids eating watermelon in Alaska.

Huck Finn is right! What a perfect shot. Can't imagine salt with watermelon but then I can't imagine it with porridge either and that's how the Scots eat it. Which is nothing to do with watermelon after all. Reminds me. I must buy some today...

Yes, the dirty fingernails just add the "all boy" flavor to the total picture. I grew up on the Texas/Louisiana border and we would never dream of eating watermelon WITHOUT salt! I think it's a Southern thing.
