Look Up Birmingham!

As in most cities, many of Birmingham's landmarks have sadly made way for more modern architecture. However,  some of our historic buildings , while having undergone extensive renovations  on their lower floors, have retained the lovely architectural detailing that was prevalent in the early 1900's high above street level.  This is the first in my series that will feature their "crowning glory", remnants of days gone by,  that can only be appreciated if you stop and look up!  Today's photograph spotlights the Empire Building on the corner of 1st Avenue North and 20th Street in downtown Birmingham.  Still stunning after all these years.

I agree that we often fail to see what's above our heads because we're always watching our feet.
The architecture is lovely indeed. It's a pity the whole building couldn't have been saved...

What a gorgeous building! I wish they still built buildings like this. I wonder if we'll ever have an architecture aesthetic revival? I'm constantly looking up when I visit cities with amazing architecture. There are so many hidden treasure above street level.

I like that building too. I love it when something classy is used to decorate a basic building. Did I answer you back? I remember you well from your visit to Paris. That was a fun afternoon having tea.

Quite stunning! It's a shame new architecture can't be as beautiful as the old.

Well done for noticing this lovely detail, the Birmingham in England has suffered from much architectural vandalism particularly in the 1960s. But it just makes you appreciate the older buildings more, I believe.
