Winter's Lacy Fingers

Birmingham, Alabama is glorious in the spring and summer. It's green and lush and full to the brim with blooming shrubs and flowers. The winter is to me, just a intriguing. I love the bare branches, winter's lacy fingers. Tonight I snapped this as the sun was setting in my neighborhood.

Cabin Fever - Day 3

Meeps and I  have been in the house for three days due to the icing on all the roads and sidewalks.   Would you like to see a picture my cat???

Talk About Your Crazy Weather

Well today the high in sunny Birmingham was 75F! Tonight at 6:00, I snapped this through the car window at church....POURING. Tomorrow, they claim the temps won't get above 34F. Seriously, what's up with all this?

Fog Encore

I know it's a repeat of sorts,  but we have had soooo much dreary weather of late, and today on my way home from work, the fog in Forest Park made me stop, get out and shoot with my phone!

Old Man Winter

We've asked him to leave, but he's still hanging around.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrr

It's not snowing this much in Birmingham today, but it's one of the coldest winter days we've seen in a few years!  I found this photo from one of our freaky one day snowfalls a few years ago and decided to share.

Winter Approaches

Here in Birmingham, we find that winter creeps in most years. Oh we get some near freezing weather in early December but today, five days after Christmas,  I didn't even need a heavy coat. Most of the year Birmingham is lush with greenery and blooming plants. We're very fortunate that way.  One of our favorites is the oakleaf hydrangea.  In summer it's glorious with huge white blooms that hang to the ground. Now their big leathery green leaves are a lovely red/orange.  As a photographer, I've learned to celebrate every season of growth.

Winter Arbor

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens is lovely in any season.  There is something blooming most of the year, but I think the arbor in the Rose Garden is beautiful with just the sleeping vines and the patina on the trellis and columns in winter.

Arctic Blast in B'ham?

The weatherman says we're getting some sort of "Arctic blast" this week. I think that translates to "winter has finally arrived in Birmingham."  This happy fellow, that hangs out in the window of Mountain Brook Flower Shop most of the year, should be very happy about that!

Ice Fountain

I spotted this gorgeous icy fountain yesterday on Highland Avenue. It was still frozen, although it was beginning to drip at the very bottom. My lucky day I think. Maybe winter isn't all that bad!
