Don't miss " The World Through My Eyes", an exhibition of Alabama's noted self taught artist Charlie Lucas at the Birmingham Museum of Art. For his sculpture Lucas often uses machine parts and other cast off materials. Twelve of his large scale pieces are on exhibit in the museum's sculpture pit. Recently I spent an afternoon photographing all of the works in the sculpture garden. It was a photographer's paradise. I especially liked this wall mounted piece, but don't worry, I have other pieces to share.

It is always facinating and amazing to me how people can look at what I would consider junk and see art. This is a great piece of work but I would never have thought to combine these objects in this way. Rather, I would have thrown them away!
Last year, during a visit to Breckenridge Co. we visted an arts festival. One of the artists did all of her work using old cans of various types. The work was beautiful.

I like this kind of Art, there's a local chap that was made redundant as a welder.. he started making the odd bit of art work and he's not looked back since. He was shocked at his hidden talent.
Virginia, this is a cool piece! I think self-taught artists are amazing. They create from a need to create, as all artists do, but without as much outside influence on their vision and techniques.
You asked about the collage format I use. It's called Mosaic Maker, and you can access it by Googling "fd's flickr toys." If you are not a Flickr user you can still make use of the tool, but it's not as easy. It is a fairly intuitive tool, but explore it thoroughly before you try to post something. There are many formats to choose from. The collage you asked about was a 4x4 with large center. The first photo specified will be the center. Good luck with it!
