JCMP Plaque Dedication

On September 9, the Jefferson County Memorial Project held the first site memorial dedications at Sloss Furnaces. The plaque honored two of the 30 Jefferson County victims of syncing, Tom Redmond and Jake McKenzie, both workers at mines owned by Sloss/Sheffield mines.

These stairs at Sloss Furnaces lead up to First Avenue North above.  I don't go very far up without a handrail, no matter how great the photo op!

Hearty Souls

This was taken last Friday when the temps was probably in the high 30's, but we found at least five varieties of ferns growing out of the bricks and rocks here at Sloss Furnaces.

Yesterday, my photography buddy Michael and I stopped off at Sloss Furnaces. It was cold and overcast but we decided to see if we could find some new things that we'd not shot before.  We've both been there more times than we could count.  A challenge but he and I both agreed that we saw t his wonderful Birmingham landmark with new eyes. I have lots  more to share!

Dance Like Nobody's Watching...

 I had a great time photographing The Episcopal Place's annual Gumbo Gala at Sloss Furnaces last Saturday.  This adorable little girl had a ball dancing down in front of the band. The Crawfish never missed a beat all day despite the 98F temps! More photos coming.

I Have No Idea

what this is or how it was used.  The late afternoon light is what drew me into this room full of old machinery at Sloss Furnaces.

As a Bystander

I walked up on this lovely young lady at Sloss Furnaces not long ago.  I wasn't her photographer, but I snuck a few shots.  I love her dress against the industrial backdrop.

The View

My very talented artist friend Kevin Irwin's studio is one of my favorite places to shoot. It's located right over the viaduct from downtown Birmingham.  I love the way the window frames Sloss Furnaces in the distance.

Today I will hopefully be arriving back in Birmingham from a  wonderful 7 days in Paris with my dear friend Mary Gilbert from Cincinnati.  I will begin  posting new  photos on Paris Through My Lens tomorrow so  jump over and have a look. Ode to Baseball

Those of you who know me are well aware that my knowledge of baseball might fill a thimble.  I am pretty clueless,  but this shelf full of old, well worn gloves at On A Shoestring, and this terrific bat sculpture at Sloss Furnaces, both caught my eye.  My post today is for my blog friend Mister Earl , who is over the moon about the playoffs or something or other.

It's been many, many years (39 to be exact) since these old stacks at Sloss Furnaces were smoking but last week the clouds made it look like they were back in business!

Heavy Metal - Michael Bonadio

Add another Birmingham artist to my list! Yesterday I was at Lite Box Gallery visiting with my talented friend Kate Merritt Davis. Kate is curator for an upcoming show there beginning Friday, February 12, from 5-9. Who should walk in but Michael Bonadio. Michael is Artist in Residence/Production Manager at Sloss Furnaces. Michael will have two of his pieces on exhibit ( I have one for you today). Artist......Sloss Furnaces...... two of my favorite things!!!

And my I send a sincere thank you to my faithful blog reader, Beverly and her husband, who recognized me and were so nice to come and say hello yesterday at the Cantina. How wonderful to meet you and put names and faces together!!!

Across the Tracks

This building sits across the railroad tracks from Sloss Furnaces. I have no idea what it was used for in the past. It looks abandoned, yet I thought the afternoon sun really showed it off!
