The Crape Myrtles are a Bloomin'

This time of year Birmingham is covered with the blossoms of the crape myrtle. They come in all colors of white, lilac, pink and my personal favorite that I call watermelon, shown here today. Birmingham 'eye candy' for sure!

Crape myrtle look like competitors to bougainvilliers that you should have to I presume.

It's funny that you refer to that color as watermelon. When I was a little girl I used to walk to the corner market with my grandmother. On the way there we always passed a crape myrtle that I referred to as "the watermelon tree" because I never could remember the proper name.

beautiful shots - I like it when the wind blows and they release part of their blooms - it's like heavenly, fluffy, fragrant snow in pastel colors

I have the watermelon-colored ones in my yard. My aunt, who lives in Texas, once made a comment that crape myrtles were indigenous to Texas. She just hasnt been around Alabama during blooming season, obviously!

Lelia,
My grandmother had this color in her yard and she watched each day to see how many new blooms she had. I love them too!

Char,
I've tried to get the white ones with the petals all over the ground like snow. So far not such great pics but I'll keep trying.

I think watermelon is a great name for this colour! Sounds like one of those Dulux paint colours that have bizarre names, like Toffee Apple, Gravel, etc!

Watermelon is a good color! But then, in Georgia I remember eating yellow watermelons.

Heh, Heh! Just giving you a hard time, V.

Our crepe myrtles are still blooming but they don't look this good anymore.

Now what do I know from flowers? I probably couldn't tell crape myrtle from crepe paper. My wife is always asking me, "now, do you remember what kind of flower this is?" Duh, no.
