Stokin' the Fire BBQ and Music Festival

As your roving reporter in Birmingham, I found myself at Sloss Furnaces on Saturday morning to cover the Stokin' the Fire BBQ and Music Festival. Alas, the BBQ tasting wasn't until 4:00 that afternoon, but I wandered around the whole place and checked out the team tents and the various grills/smokers. I'm a fair barbeque smoker myself, and I have to tell you that there were some mighty fine rigs out there. I don't know who the winners were, but I can tell you that everyone was having a fine time at 11:00 and I can only imagine how much fun they were having by nightfall when the music really cranked up. Oh and just for the record, my two favorite team names were: "Bad to the Bone" and "Bubba Q"!

Just one of the Mega-Grills!!

My southern readers won't need an explanation here but for the rest of you, this is a smoked Boston butt. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Boston or anything Yankee. Butts (excuse my French), ribs and I think chicken were the categories for judging.

Before any more rumors start about southerners, I will add the butt (excuse her French) is a cut of pork that comes from the upper part of the shoulder from the front leg. Absolutely delicious!

Thanks Judi for that extra info!! :)

That piece of butt looks mighty good to this "yankee" in Belgrade! Slurp! Woof!

Funny, V. And interesting. And mouth-watering.

Why you didn't go back for the tasting I don't unnerstand...I think you needed to get your butt in gear! Heh. Heh.

Did his horn melt in the heat? Boston butt makes the most sinful pulled-pork sandwiches.

WV: Retch. I'm sure that didn't happen.

I'm glad to see that the distribution of redneck weirdos extends beyond the borders of Missouri. Wonder what that guy is trying to say with the twisted horns.

Bubba Q...love that name! I can just imagine how good that place must have smelled by 4 in the afternoon.

now that's a grill a man can be proud of in his backyard!

Stokin the Fire looks like a place I might find some good smiked pork. Great shots of the "participanats" hard at work...starting at dwan probably. The smell there must have seemed like heaven (and certainly, badly, missing when we walk the streets of Paris. Incredible coffee and chocolate pastries do help somewhat but nothing replaces my Bar-B-Q pork and fried shrimp.)

Thank you for visiting Tampa DP. Now you must also come by Tampa Florida Photo (both City Daily Photo sites)...yes, crazy person that I am, I have two.)
