One of God's Tiniest Foot Soldiers
Occasionally I am asked why I do this every day. Aside from the obvious - being able to hone my photography skills, I have found unexpected rewards. As I am out scouting interesting subjects to photograph, I run into some really wonderful people making a difference in my community.
Yesterday I took a spin downtown. As I cruised past Linn Park in the heart of the city, I noticed people sitting quietly all over the park. I decided to investigate. In the pavilion I found a group of 2o or so men, women and children busily setting up for lunch. They weren't getting ready for a family picnic or reunion - they were offering a delicious hot lunch ( we're talking fried chicken here) to some of our city's homeless. Their shirts said it all: "God's Foot Soldiers" on the back, and on the front "Family and Friends Homeless Ministry". They told me that this is a monthly commitment. Good people doing good work - a blessing.

Virginia,
Love the faces in these photos. In Pensacola there are many, many agencies helping the hungry and dispossessed but they passed an ordinance against feeding people in public and I know of one group that was effectively put out of business. Hooray for Birmingham!
V,
That's a wonderful story you posted today.
God bless these people who care for the less fortunate fellow human beings.
You've captured such beautiful smiles there. It's amazing how many stories there are out there..
Mother Theresa got it right! Lovely photos and I so agree with you, thru our photo blogs we get to meet great people, get to really know our cities and to share it all with each other.
OH, that boy's face is radiant!
So many wonderful stories out there just waiting to be discovered. THanks for sharing this with us, Virginia. These folks and all the others like them quietly trying to help those in their communities make me proud to be a human being. Isn't it amazing to see how much we can accomplish if we just reach out to those around us?
The term Serendipity comes to mind from your account. Unexpected treasures not sought.
It doesn't take much to make a difference in someones life.
Beautiful imagery and post.
Bless these wonderful folks.
I was just listening to Carole King's Tapestry album.
When a new war has begun (IN EUROPE !!!), Russia vs. Georgia, it's very conforting to know there are people trying to help other people somewhere on the planet!
Thank you so much, Virginia, for your nice comment on my blog! :-)

Virginia, I think you have a way with photographing people. These portraits are wonderful, especially of the little boy. I've seen other portraits of yours that are just as good. Not everyone can do people so well. You just might have the gift!
As you said good people doing good work. It's nice to know there are good people out there in the world!
Yes, doing a daily photo blog really does put you in touch with the realities all around! Very nice post today. What a wonderful ministry.
